Solar Array Installed Near Hampstead is One of the Largest Rooftop Community Solar Projects in the U.S.

A 9.2-megawatt rooftop community solar array near Hampstead, Maryland — jointly owned by Summit Ridge Energy and HASI — is now one of the largest of its kind in the U.S. Installed atop the one million-square-foot Penguin Random House distribution center, the project spans 23 acres and will provide energy savings to approximately 1,300 residential and small commercial customers across the state.

The system is expected to generate nearly 12 million kilowatt-hours annually, offsetting 8,000 metric tons of carbon. Over the next two decades, it is projected to deliver more than $2.5 million in energy savings. The project contributes to Maryland’s clean energy goals and represents a model of private-public partnership and noninvasive solar development that preserves agricultural land while expanding access to renewable energy.
